Motorcycle Camping in Poudre Canyon/Cameron Pass

There are quite a few campgrounds along CO 14 in the Poudre Canyon and on Cameron Pass. Fortunately, most of these are also motorcycle-accessible. The campgrounds are presented here moving east to west, up the canyon and over the pass, down into North Park. They are, in sequence, Ansel Watrous, Stove Prairie Landing, Narrows and Lower Narrows, Dutch George, Mountain Park, Kelly Flats, Big Bend, Sleeping Elephant, Big South, Aspen Glen, Chambers Lake, and Aspen Campgrounds.

Ansel Watrous Campground

Ansel Watrous Campground Ansel Watrous Campground is the only campground in the Poudre Canyon below the Mishawaka Inn. It is split into two sections. The western portion has 10 sites, 3 of which are walk-in tent sites.

The road is paved, so motorcycles have easy access. The sites have tables and fire pits. Restrooms and dumpsters are available. The eastern portion of the campground has nine more sites with the same amenities. The eastern portion also has a small beach along the river, but not much shade. The nightly fee is $21.

Stove Prairie Landing Campground

Stove Prairie Landing CampgroundThere are nine sites at Stove Prairie Landing Campground, in the Poudre Canyon. Half of the sites are walk-in tent sites only. The Cache La Poudre River runs right by. There is not a lot of shade for some sites but walk-in sites 3, 4, and 6 are very shady. The road is paved and the sites are easily accessible on a motorcycle.

Amenities include tables, toilets, dumpsters, fire pits, and water. The nightly fee is $21.

Narrows Campground and Lower Narrows Campground

Narrows CampgroundAbout 19 miles up the Poudre Canyon you’ll find Narrows Campground, with seven sites, and just down the road Lower Narrows Campground, with eight sites.

Both campgrounds offer outhouses, dumpsters, tables, fire pits, and water. The fee at both is $21 per night.

The photo at right is of Narrows and one below is Lower Narrows. Both campgrounds are right on the river and Lower Narrows has walk-in tent sites only, but it’s not a long walk to any site.

Lower Narrows CampgroundCampsite 12 in Lower Narrows is especially appealing. This is a good, motorcycle-accessible campground.

Dutch George Campground

Dutch George CampgroundAbout 20 miles up the Poudre Canyon you’ll find Dutch George Campground, with 20 sites. A paved road runs all through the campground, making it an easy choice for those on motorcycles.

The sites offer tables and fire rings and not a lot of shade. A nature trail runs along the river. The views from here are quite beautiful.

There is a campground host and amenities include water, toilets, and dumpsters. The nightly fee is $21.

Mountain Park Campground

Mountain Park CampgroundAbout 21 miles up the Poudre Canyon you’ll find Mountain Park Campground, one of the largest in the canyon with 55 sites. A paved road runs all through the facility, making it a good stop for folks on bikes.

The nightly fee is $22 or $25 for sites with electrical hook-ups. The sites offer tables and fire pits.

The campground is the most highly developed in the canyon, with an amphitheatre, basketball courts, and a playground. Some of the sites have multiple tent pads, for a double fee.

Mountain Park has toilets and showers and many of the sites are well shaded. There is also a picnic area and trail. If you just want to stop for lunch, there is a $5 day-use fee.

Kelly Flats Campground

Kelly Flats CampgroundAbout halfway up the Poudre Canyon you'll find Kelly Flats Campground, with 29 sites on both sides of the river. A paved road runs all through the campground. The nightly fee is $22 and the sites offer tables and fire pits.

The campground also has many walk-in tent sites. The campground host sells firewood and there is a recreation area just off the road for kids to play. (But who goes motorcycle touring with the kids along?)

Other amenities include water, outhouses, and dumpsters. Some of the sites have more shade than others.

Big Bend Campground

Big Bend CampgroundBig Bend Campground is another of the small motorcycle-accessible campgrounds along CO 14 in the Poudre Canyon. It is just a little east of Sleeping Elephant Mountain.

Unlike many of the campgrounds further up the canyon, Big Bend is not right next to the road, so it’s a little quieter. It has six sites that offer tables and fire pits. The campground has water, restrooms, a dumpster and also has fishing access.

The nightly fee is $17. There is very little shade.

Sleeping Elephant Campground

Sleeping Elephant CampgroundSleeping Elephant Campground is not well marked but you’ll know you're close when you see the road signs pointing out Sleeping Elephant Mountain. It is in the upper half of Poudre Canyon on CO 14, on the north side of the road.

The campground has 15 campsites with fire rings and tables. The fee is $17. Drinking water, dumpsters, and outhouses are available. Some of the sites have shade.

The campground is completely motorcycle-accessible.

Sleeping Elephant MountainHere’s a shot of Sleeping Elephant Mountain. Can you see the elephant? The view is in profile and that’s its head on the left.

Big South Campground

Big South CampgroundBig South Campground is in the upper half of the Poudre Canyon on CO 14. It is very small, with only four campsites.

The fee is $17 and there are tables, an outhouse, and fire rings. All the sites are very close to the road.

There is no drinking water and there are no reservations.

Aspen Glen Campground

Aspen Glen CampgroundOn the north side of CO 14, just a little east of Chambers Lake Campground in the Poudre Canyon, is Aspen Glen Campground.

The gravel road in the campground is in pretty bad shape but it is still motorcycle-accessible. It is right alongside the road, so if you choose it you won't have far to ride on the bad road.

There are nine sites with tables and fire rings. The campground has outhouses, drinking water, and a dumpster, and the fee is $17 per night.

Some sites have shade and some do not. There are no reservations.

Chambers Lake Campground

Chambers Lake CampgroundChambers Lake Campground is a large one, with 52 sites. It is just off CO 14 on a paved road up Poudre Canyon close to Cameron Pass. Motorcyclists touring Colorado on their bikes will find this a good place to spend the night, if they are the camping sort.

All the sites have tables and fire pits. The campground has water, outhouses, and a dumpster. There is a lot of shade and 350-acre Chambers Lake is close by.

The camping fee is $22 per night and reservations can be made at 1-877-444-6777.

Aspen Campground

Aspen Campground Just outside of Gould, about a mile off CO 14 on a good gravel road, is Aspen Campground. Gould itself is on the west side of Cameron Pass, east of Walden.

There are seven sites, tent camping only, all with tables and fire pits. The campground has water, outhouses, and a dumpster. The daily fee is $10. When we visited it also had a number of big mud holes in the road within the campground itself.

There is another campground further up the same gravel road but it is probably too remote to be considered motorcycle-accessible.
