Berthoud PassBerthoud Pass Alert
I
just got an email asking me to tell everyone that "Berthoud is in extremely
poor
condition. Rode it today, and even had it not been raining and snowing, the road
would be very bad! The road was in terrible shape. Lots of potholes,
cracks,
and still a lot of sand all over." So be alert if you're riding Berthoud.
US 40 branches off from I-70 at Empire, running up over Berthoud Pass to Winter Park. The pass is full of switchbacks and work is in progress widening the road, making it less treacherous in winter than it has always been. There are three motorcycle-accessible campgrounds along the way (Mizpah, Idlewild, and Robbers Roost), as well as several trailheads.
